After a hard day at work, there’s nothing better than coming home. Home is a place where memories are made, where dust bunnies hide, and where your life really happens. Home is an amazing thing, but what happens if having a home isn’t within your reach? That’s where Habitat for Humanity of Madison County comes in to play.
The mission of Habitat for Humanity of Madison County is to end poverty housing in the community by providing education and decent shelter for those in need. Traci Draper from Habitat for Humanity was kind enough to join Mission Multiplier at our most recent team meeting. “[We] provide housing for those who may not be able to get a mortgage the traditional way… Everyone wants to achieve the American dream,” said Traci. She educated the team on the work each applicant must do in order to qualify for the affordable housing. Each family must go through a 5-step process, including giving 350 “sweat-equity” hours that involve community volunteering, classes on building budgets, and information on how to “get along with your neighbors”.
Each home takes about 13 weeks to build, a process that we plan to participate in! The money for each build comes from the 0% interest rate mortgage of the home before it, ensuring that the money entrusted to Habitat for Humanity is placed back into the organization’s efforts. The volunteers and paid staff are a pivotal part of the home development, as they are the ones ultimately responsible for ensuring that each home is safe and built to Habitat standards.
Whether you are 14 years old or 95 years young, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity is possible. Each volunteer must complete a Volunteer Orientation that emphasizes safety, camaraderie, and how to help your community. These 30-45 minute orientations happen approximately every other Saturday, giving potential volunteers plenty of opportunities to get started.
